What Are Dentures?
Understanding Full & Partial Dentures
Dentures are a type of removable dental prosthesis, and are designed to replace one or more missing teeth. There are two primary types of dentures: full dentures and partial dentures.
Full dentures, also called “full-arch” dentures, require the extraction of all of your remaining natural teeth. They usually use an acrylic base with durable false teeth, and are fitted directly onto your gums, restoring your smile. They are held in place with friction, but denture adhesive can also be used for a tighter hold.
Partial dentures, on the other hand, are used if you’re only missing a few teeth. They consist of multiple false teeth in a metal and plastic framework. Your denture is attached to your other teeth to ensure a tight fit and strong hold. Depending on the extent of your tooth loss and your oral health, either type of denture may be right for you.

What To Expect
The Denture Fitting Process
The process of fitting dentures is similar for both full and partial dentures. However, all of your remaining teeth must be extracted by Dr. Reddy before you have your full dentures fitted.
At your fitting appointment, Dr. Reddy will use dental putty to take molds and impressions of your teeth and gums before taking measurements using a wax bite form, which will help guide the dental lab that will be creating your dentures.
All of this information will be sent to a dental lab. The lab will build a set of test dentures using false teeth and dental wax, and send them to SmileWell Dental. You’ll come in for a follow-up appointment to check the fit of these wax dentures.
If the fit of your wax dentures is perfect, Dr. Reddy will send them back and have your final set of dentures crafted, and you’ll come back to pick them up in a week or so. If the fit isn’t right, the dentures will be adjusted and sent back for further refinement. This process may be repeated a few times to ensure a perfectly functional and comfortable fit.
Caring For Your Dentures
What You Need To Know
Dr. Reddy will provide you with a comprehensive set of instructions about caring for your new dentures. Most importantly, you need to remove them and clean your dentures and your gums after eating. They also need to be brushed and soaked in a denture cleaning solution overnight.
Following Dr. Reddy’s complete instructions to care for your dentures will ensure that they remain in great shape for years to come.
