The Benefits of
Laughing gas sedation
Laughing gas sedation has a number of great benefits. First, there are no pills or needles involved. You’ll simply put on a comfortable nose mask, and breathe through your nose whenever Dr. Reddy instructs you to do so.
Nitrous oxide sedation is also very effective at fighting feelings of fear and anxiety. You will feel less connected to what’s happening around you, and the nitrous oxide will help eliminate your discomfort. However, you will remain completely conscious, and will be able to respond to commands and questions.
Laughing gas sedation can also help with other types of fear and discomfort. For example, if you’re afraid of needles, laughing gas makes it easier to have your mouth numbed before your procedure. Or, if you have a very strong gag reflex, nitrous oxide helps impair this reflex and ensures your comfort during treatment.
Another great benefit of laughing gas sedation is that it lasts only about 5 minutes after you stop breathing in the gas. Unlike other methods like oral conscious sedation and IV sedation, which have after-effects that can last 4-6 hours, sedation dentistry is much more minimal. You can drive yourself home after your procedure, or even go back to work, if necessary.
what treatments
is sedation offered for?
At our office, we offer sedation dentistry for a wide variety of procedures. Many patients opt for sedation during treatments like dental fillings and dental crown preparation, for tooth extractions, or when getting dental implants. Sedation makes it easier to sit through long or invasive procedures without feeling any discomfort.
However, we’re willing to offer sedation for just about any appointment at our office. If you have serious dental anxiety, for example, you may wish to be sedated even for a routine teeth cleaning and oral exam. If so, just let Dr. Reddy know, and she can help you decide if sedation is a good option for you.
Does Nitrous Oxide Sedation
have any side effects?
The side effects of nitrous oxide are minor, and usually go away within just a few minutes. Some patients may experience side effects like headaches, nausea, confusion, dizziness, and sluggishness or fatigue.
